The Importance of
Words What makes humans different from the rest of the animals in this world is that we have words, words to call things, words to express our feelings, words to call ourselves and each other.
But words are no good unless they are shared. And that is what draws us to each other, to read, to listen, to write, to speak, to sign, to communicate. Even when we might not be able to put down in words what we want to stay, we can relate to someone who said it for us, yesterday, today, tomorrow, across the centuries, and across all boundaries. Even when words fail us, we still have the ability to explain ourselves toward the right words. We may never find those right words, but the talking or the signing or however we might communicate helps heal wounds. I once told someone that faith might be the most important word in the universe because without it we would die. I still believe this, but I think that words have the distinct ability to help us gain faith as well. Some people would add "or lose faith," but I will say that if we truly care about our fellow humans, we should only be in the business of giving hope, propping it up and it open like a door propped open with a wrought iron wedge under it because we all deserve to walk through faith's door which opens us to the world and all the good possibilities it can offer. And so, it is with my words that I try to express myself as I inhabit my part of the word, and I hope that at the least readers can appreciate my efforts to make the world a little better. At the best, I hope that you might find relationship, companionship, and understanding that you might not have had otherwise. May my words and the words of others speak to you.
